Redhill Railway Housing (c.1926)

Location

Bowman Street, Redhill, South Australia

Construction Type

Unconfirmed – suspected constructed by the Economic Duplex Building Block Co.

Background History

The town of Redhill (formerly Broughton) was established in the late nineteenth century in the mid north of South Australia, about 150km north of Adelaide.

In c.1925 the broad gauge line was extended to Redhill from Port Pirie and the scheme include the construction of railway workers’ housing. Four concrete cottages were constructed to a similar model to the Californian bungalows being built concurrently for the South Australian Thousand Homes Scheme. The Redhill cottages appear to have been constructed by the Economic Duplex Building Block Co. because of their similarity in design and construction to other railway houses commissioned by the South Australian Railways at Peterborough and Tailem Bend – refer to c.1924-1926 Railway Housing, Peterborough & Tailem Bend, built by the Economic Duplex Building Block Company
